Agenda
솔크 연구소를 재조형화하면서 ‘연결’을 핵심 개념으로 설정한 이유는 중정(courtyard)의 역할에서 그 영감을 얻었기 때문이다. 두 개의 독립적인 건물 사이에 위치한 중정은 단순한 빈 공간이 아니라, 두 구조를 하나로 묶어주는 매개체이자 중심이다. 특히 그 사이를 흐르는 물길은 시각적, 감각적 연결감을 강화하며, 분리된 구조물 사이에 유기적인 흐름을 만들어낸다. 이처럼 중정은 물리적 경계를 넘어 공간 간의 관계를 조율하고, 사용자의 동선과 시선을 하나로 잇는 중요한 장치로 작용한다. 그 인상 깊은 공간 경험이 결국 ‘연결’이라는 개념으로 재해석되었다.
In the reconfiguration of the Salk Institute, the central concept was defined as “connection.”This notion is not merely symbolic but arises from the very structure and experience of the space. The inspiration for this idea comes particularly from the role of the courtyardsituated between two independent buildings.
The courtyard is not an empty void but functions as a mediator and central elementthat binds the two architectural forms into a unified whole. The stream of water flowing through it reinforces a sense of visual and sensory connection, creating an organic flow between the otherwise separate structures. In this way, the courtyard goes beyond physical boundaries, orchestrating relationships among spacesand serving as a device that aligns both the movement and gaze of its users.
Ultimately, this profound spatial experience was reinterpreted into the architectural concept of “connection,”which has come to occupy the core of both design thinking and spatial experience.
